Lock it or lose it.

Wellington County OPP are driving home that message following a recent car theft in Mount Forest.

OPP say a 2013 Red Kia Rio with Ontario license plate CTYH416 was stolen from a parking lot on Industrial Drive in the early morning hours, between 1:00-3:00am Monday, August 29th.

There is a buffed-out scratch along the driver’s side rear door.

Police are asking for the public’s assistance in locating the missing vehicle, and anyone with any information is asked to call Wellington County OPP or Crime Stoppers.

Below are some steps that all vehicle owners can do to help reduce the number of stolen vehicles, and to protect yourself as the vehicle owner:

-Do not leave your keys in your vehicle.
-Do not leave your vehicle running.
-Lock your vehicle.
-Treat your keys like cash – Don’t leave keys in places where they are easy to steal such as a gym locker, on your desk at work, in an open purse or unattended in a shopping cart.
-Never leave anything in your vehicle in plain view such as loose change, cell phones, cameras, clothing, gifts, cigarettes, medication, firearms, or any other valuables.
-Install a remote car starter – Remote starters are designed to shut off if anyone attempts to drive the vehicle without a key. This will allow you to warm up your car without risk of theft.
