Bayfield Lavender Farm welcoming visitors this summer

The Bayfield Lavender Farm is opening up to visitors this summer.

Owner Gemma James Smith and her husband moved into a property on Porter’s Hill Line about six years ago and found some overgrown lavender on the property. At first James Smith really didn’t know what to do with it, but she quickly took an interest in the flower.

“I just started propagating from there and so for the past six years I’ve been growing it and harvesting it myself and steam distilling it for essential oils which I then turn into some hand crafted products,” she said.

James Smith says the products include things like lavender spray and bubble bath and soap made from their own goats milk. They’ve been selling those products in local stores for the past five years.

“The next natural step for the business is to open up to visitors so that people can see the lavender in bloom or the lavender being processed and I have been turning one of our sheds into a little gift shop as well,” she says.

There is just one other lavender farm in Huron County, Lavender Works near Brussels.

More information about the farm and their products can be found on the Bayfield Lavender Farm web site.
