The Ontario Provincial Police report six deaths over the Thanksgiving weekend and 8,088 charges on the roads, trails, and waterways it patrols.
“Sadly, poor road behaviours took their toll on human life, with three motor vehicle passengers, a driver, and a pedestrian killed in four separate incidents over the weekend,” said the OPP. “The OPP also responded to a boating fatality.”
The OPP joined other policing agencies over the long weekend in Operation Impact, an enforcement effort targeting four dangerous driving behaviours, speeding, distracted driving, driving impaired, and not wearing seatbelts.
Most of the charges laid across Ontario were for aggressive driving. Officers laid 5,141 speeding charges and another 116 for stunt driving.
Police charged 318 drivers and passengers for not wearing their seatbelts. There were 153 charges for impaired driving and 69 for distracted driving.
“Ontarians are reminded that complying with all traffic laws is their best chance at preventing collisions, injuries, and fatalities on the road,” said police.
