Motorists reminded of new amber-red light systems on school buses

Many drivers in Midwestern Ontario have been caught unaware of recent changes to stoplights on school buses as children went back to school following the Labour Day holiday.

All buses in Ontario have updated their lighting to include a flashing amber light before the usual flashing red.

This change was made over this summer and is applicable to all school buses manufactured after January of 2005. The changes were made to provide advance notice to drivers that the school bus is preparing to stop.

Drivers that see a school bus with its upper amber lights activated should slow down and prepare to stop, and as usual, vehicles that see its upper red lights and stop arm activated must come to a complete stop.

Ontario Provincial Police note that there are a number of school buses manufactured prior to 2005 still in operation that will continue to use an all red lighting system.
