Charges laid in death of cyclist

Seven months after a cyclist was killed by the driver of a stolen vehicle, charges have been laid.

The Elgin County Ontario Provincial Police announced Wednesday that charges had been laid in the death of Michael Smith, 59, of London. He was killed on Saturday, October 30, 2021 while cycling on Wilson Line near Belmont Road in Malahide Township.

According to police, he was hit by a stolen vehicle just before 5 p.m.

On Wednesday, police announced that charges of failing to stop at an accident causing death, theft under $5,000, and possession of property obtained by crime have been laid against Kiya Dietrich, 21, of Stratford.

Dietrich is to appear in court in St. Thomas at a later date, according to police.
