Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health reported the region’s first lab confirmed case of the COVID-19 Omicron variant of concern Friday.

A media release says the positive case is a Guelph male 10-20 years of age. The individual was fully vaccinated and is experiencing mild symptoms.

Medical Officer of Health Dr. Nicola Mercer says the case is a reminder to residents to remain vigilant.

WDG Public Health is currently completing the investigation of this case and several potential related cases. Public Health is contacting any high-risk exposures to the positive case

“I know it has been a long pandemic, but we must continue to act in ways that protect ourselves, those we love and our communities from this virus,” said Dr. Mercer.

Members of the public do not need to take additional steps at this time unless directed by Public Health.

“This is a time to act with caution,” said Dr. Mercer. “We know that the combined protection of the public health measures available to us – masking, physical distancing, limiting gathering sizes and getting first, second and booster doses of a COVID-19 vaccine – will continue to protect us against the virus.”
