Computer fraud scam being investigated after nearly $40,000 was stolen from victim

A computer fraud scam is being investigated by police after a Perth East resident was tricked out of nearly $40,000.

Perth County OPP were notified by a victim on November 8 that the fraud occurred between October 31 and November 8. The victim claims the suspect posed as a member of the popular Geek Squad service, typically associated with Best Buy. The victim gave the suspect access to their computer for a week, during which time the suspect manipulated bank accounts and defrauded the victim out of $39,000. The investigation is ongoing.

Police once again are reminding the public that “fraud is a multi-billion dollar per year business and modern, tech savvy, fraudsters will do their best to create confusion and chaos during interactions, leading victims to react impulsively and hand over their money.” If you’ve been the victim of fraud, call the OPP or Crime Stoppers.
