The Mayor of Central Huron says he feels the two major problems facing the municipality and the county go hand and hand; housing and work force.
And Jim Ginn says they’re problems that the municipalities don’t get involved with.
“But it’s such a problem right now that business owners can’t find workers and it’s hard to move them here if you don’t have adequate housing. So I think we’ve put things in place, both at Central Huron and at the county level, quite a few plans of subdivision have been approved, so we just need to get those houses built,” said Ginn.
Ginn notes, one other challenge is that a lot of the new homes are being bought up be people moving from the urban centres into Huron County and there are benefits to that as well, but he says he also need housing for Huron County residents and workers coming in to Huron County to take those jobs.
Ginn says another problem facing Central Huron council is what to do with the swimming pool in Clinton. Ginn says it wasn’t open this year because it was condemned by the Health Unit.
“It’s basically been condemned and it’s the deck and it’s old and it needs either a major refurbishment or a replacement and it’s a little difficult when we have an indoor pool in Vanastra and an indoor pool in Goderich where people can take swimming lessons all year round,” added Ginn.
Ginn adds, there will be some exciting new on the economic development front regarding the purchase of the Bluewater Centre. But he says they’ve signed a confidentiality agreement with the purchaser and likely won’t be able to say anything for another year.
