South Huron Mayor, George Finch, says there’s no question affordable housing is the biggest need in South Huron and the county.
“We just can’t sit and wait for the government to give us funding for affordable housing,” warned Finch. “We have to reach out to all of the developers. So we’ve done that over the last four years, we’ve actually reached out and garnered almost 950 housing units that have been approved in our term of council through seven housing developments.”
Finch says another one of his priorities right now is the fire hall in Dashwood and the upgrades to the fire hall in Exeter.
“We’ve got to finalize and round out our recreational facilities and I think a walking track and a gymnasium would round it out very nicely. So we’ve got both arenas under construction and nearing completion and we’ve got the Connection Centre, which we call the Compassion Centre for those that are facing housing and food insecurity.”
Finch says those are the most immediate projects as far as being able to get to them quickly. The big issue, housing, is going to take a little longer, but they are making progress.
