Weather experts say conditions outside were right for the development of funnel clouds in some areas.
Shortly after 6 p.m. Friday, Environment Canada issued a weather advisory for eastern Middlesex County and southern Huron County as funnel clouds may develop over the parts of these regions Friday evening. About an hour later, the advisory ended.
“Funnel clouds have been reported across portions of southwestern Ontario this afternoon. These types of funnel clouds are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms,” a release from Environment Canada read. “This weak rotation is normally not a danger near the ground.”
The weather agency said there is a chance that this rotation could intensify and become a land spout tornado, with any thunderstorm development near Huron shores, and there is an ongoing storm near Ailsa Craig as of 6:25 p.m. Friday.
Most of southwestern Ontario remains under a heat warning Friday evening. Hot and muggy conditions are expected to persist throughout the weekend.
