The Goderich Lions Club has partnered with the Huron Immigration Partnership, the Wingham Community Connectors, and the Goderich Ministerial Association to launch the Huron Area Newcomer Fund.
John Maskaant is the Chair of the new fund. He says the challenges facing immigrants from Ukraine provided the impetus for the fund, but they also realized that there are other newcomers who need help.
“They have, probably, various ways of getting help, but this is kind of a last resort for them when others are limited a little bit. With our fund, we can deal with their emergencies and that’s where we hope to be a big help to people in trouble,” he said.
“We can help with expenses that are extraordinary expenses that are beyond the capacity of other agencies or individuals to provide. So whether it’s the host family or dental needs or eye glasses, they would apply, then we would give them some money,” said Maskaant.
Maskaant says the Huron Area Newcomer Fund is now up and running. More information about the program, how people can apply for funds and how people donate to the fund can be found on the Goderich Lions Club website.
