The Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe and the U.S. Forest Service signed a memorandum of understanding in 2019 for shared stewardship of the Chippewa National Forest; now, with more diverse trees and shrubs and less underbrush, the forest has responded to this holistic management approach incorporating traditional ecological knowledge.
