Provincial police in in Huron County are investigating after several road signs were stolen and others vandalized with offensive symbols.
According to Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), investigators are looking into reports of mischief this week that includes a number of defaced road signs in Central Huron and Morris-Turnberry, while others have been stolen from their designated locations.
“Huron County OPP investigated a report of four road signs around B-Line Road and McLean Line being spray-painted. These signs were painted with offensive images and symbols,” a release from the OPP read. “One of the signs was also spray painted to make it look like an 80 kilometre per hour zone rather than a maximum 50 km/h.”
Some of the inappropriate images and symbols include a swastika and male genitals. Huron OPP is reminding the public that mischief crimes is a Criminal Code offence and may be punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
“Signs use different symbols, colors, and shapes for easy identification in order to keep everyone alert, aware, and safe,” the OPP said in a statement. “Stealing a stop sign from an intersection creates a danger to all users of the roadway, it’s not a joke, it’s a crime with significant consequences.”
Any person with information about these incidents is asked to contact Huron OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or 519-482-1677.
