Hanover’s Mayor, Sue Paterson, declared Saturday’s inaugural ‘Mayor’s Tidy Town Challenge’ a success.
The event was part of the town’s Earth Day initiatives and had the mayor, town council members, and 30 residents clean up litter around Hanover. Approximately 25 bags of garbage were collected Saturday morning.
Eight classes of grade seven and eight students from John Diefenbaker Secondary School also pitched in on Friday, spending several hours cleaning up 60 bags of litter from all over Hanover.
“The commitment of our students is sincerely appreciated,” Mayor Paterson said. “This is a great partnership and our leaders of tomorrow are positively helping to combat climate change through their actions.”
This was Hanover’s first time providing co-ordinated initiatives to spur community engagement, make the community cleaner, and promote awareness of climate change.
Other Earth Day events included a community wide yard sale, a climate change seminar hosted by Hanover Public Library, and a children’s recycled art contest.
