Driver of stolen car arrested after speeding through R.I.D.E. program

The Owen Sound Police Service (OSPS) arrested a woman who failed to stop during a R.I.D.E. program on Saturday evening.

OSPS said the woman was driving a 2019 Hyundai Elantra, which had been reported stolen from the Guelph area.

Police said they were conducting a R.I.D.E. program, just after 5 p.m., on 14th Street West when the woman ignored the stop and sped away.

“The driver was unable to execute a turn at the dead-end at 14th Street West and crashed the vehicle onto a snowbank,” a statement from the OSPS said.

Officers said that the female driver and a male passenger fled the vehicle as they responded to the area.

Police, with help from members of the public, located and arrested both individuals.

After her arrest, it was determined that the 27-year-old woman was under the influence of drugs while she was driving.

The woman faces several charges including impaired driving, possession of a stolen vehicle, and multiple breaches of court orders. She was also wanted on outstanding warrants out of the City of Guelph and Wellington County.

She will remain in police custody in police custody pending a court appearance on Sunday, March 6.
