After more than 18 months of meeting virtually for council and committee meetings, Ward 9 Coun. Anna Hopkins wants to create some policies for London city council’s virtual and “hybrid” meetings. A provincial government change at the start of the pandemic allows municipalities to meet using video conference software, which London has done since the start of COVID-19. City staff attend meetings virtually, as do most councillors, except for a handful who prefer to attend in council chambers. Hopkins’ motion was unanimously endorsed at Monday’s corporate services committee, and if approved by council on Nov. 16, city staff will bring back a suggested policy to guide those virtual and hybrid meetings, including use of cameras for city staff.
