Charge laid in fatal motorcycle crash near Exeter

A Kitchener resident has been charged following a three-vehicle crash east of Exeter that claimed the life of a motorcyclist.

The Ontario Provincial Police said on July 3 shortly before 2:52 p.m., a compact vehicle that was travelling west on Thames Road East attempted to pass a pickup truck. During the pass, the compact vehicle struck the pickup, lost control and veered into oncoming traffic where it collided with a motorcycle.

The motorcyclist was airlifted from the scene and taken to hospital with life threatening injuries. The driver, who has been identified as 58-year-old Anthony Paiva of Shakespeare, died in hospital as a result of his injuries on July 24.

As a result, the driver of the compact vehicle, 35-year-old Selemawit Habte of Kitchener, has been charged with careless driving causing death.  Habte is scheduled to appear in a Goderich court on October 5.
